SLS-Free and Fluoride-Free: Why Your Toothpaste Ingredients Matter

Most people have never read their toothpaste label. But if you did, you'd find a surprisingly long list of ingredients — some functional, some controversial, some actively undesirable for certain users. Here's a plain-language guide to what's actually in conventional toothpaste, why the nHA category tends to avoid the most problematic ingredients, and what to look for on labels.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
SLS is a foaming agent found in the majority of conventional toothpastes. It creates the satisfying lather most people associate with clean teeth — but the foam itself has no cleaning function. SLS is a detergent surfactant that can irritate oral mucosa, and multiple studies have linked it to recurrent aphthous ulcers (canker sores) in susceptible individuals.

Fluoride

Triclosan
An antibacterial agent once common in toothpaste. Now banned or restricted in many markets due to concerns about endocrine disruption and contribution to antibiotic resistance. Check older formulations of conventional brands if you're unsure.

- Calcium carbonate or hydrated silica (mild abrasive for plaque removal)
- Xylitol (natural sweetener with antibacterial properties)

- Glycerin (humectant to maintain texture)
- Water
